Valle Verde Dairy Co. Recalls Queso Fresco Because of Possible Health Risk

Valle Verde Dairy Co. of Turlock, CA is recalling its 10 oz and 5 lb Queso Fresco because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The product was distributed to retail stores and foodservice distributors in California, Nevada, Arizona and Oregon.

The product comes in a 10 oz clear plastic package marked with UPC 8 12345 00417 6 and a 5 lb foodservice pack marked with UPC 8 12345 00418 3, with "BEST BY" dates from 10/01/2026 through 10/20/2026 stamped on the side.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a finished product sample.
